Amblyopia
Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is closely related to strabismus. Children
learn to suppress double vision so effectively that the deviating
eye gradually loses vision. Decreased vision from amblyopia is
permanent unless it is treated at an early age. Treatment for
amblyopia usually involves patching the good eye. Since the child
must use the lazy eye, vision can improve dramatically. Strabismus
may be treated after the amblyopia has improved. Amblyopia does not
occur when alternate eyes deviate, and adults do not develop
amblyopia.
