Presbyopia Correcting IOL's
Presbyopia Correcting lens implants (IOL's) offer an enhanced range
of vision to patients who have cataract surgery or refractive lens
exchange. This surgery is considered for patients who have
significant cataracts or who want vision correction surgery and are
not candidates for laser vision correction (LASIK) or other
refractive technologies. The lens is implanted during an outpatient
surgical procedure under local anesthesia.
Traditional lens implants (IOL's) offer a single fixed focal length.
This means that a person can choose to have good distance vision and
wear glasses for close vision and the computer, or can choose good
close vision and wear glasses to see far distances. One cannot have
both with this type of implant.
Presbyopia Correcting lens implants like the ReSTOR®, ReZoom, and
Crystalens® have multiple or adjustable focal lengths. This means
that a person can see better without glasses for both distance and
near vision. Each type of lens has its own merits, so your surgeon
can recommend the best lens implant for you, depending on your
lifestyle needs. (See Photo).
People with active lifestyles often prefer the enhanced range of
vision provided by presbyopia correcting lens implants. If you have
an active lifestyle, or simply like the idea of decreasing your
dependence on glasses for most activities, you might be a good
candidate for a new technology lens implant.
